The Hudsucker Proxy followed Barton Fink; Burn After Reading followed No Country For Old Men; and continuing that trend of a serious film followed by a fun one, The Coen Brothers’ next after the low-key Inside Llewyn Davis is Hollywood kidnap caper Hail Caesar!. They’ve assembled a stellar cast of favourite collaborators and Coen newbies for this one, and the first trailer has just arrived.
Set during one of the golden ages of the big studio system, the film is focused on private detective turned movie company fixer Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), who tracks down and covers up scandals among contracted players and directors. His current case involves him digging into the mysterious disappearance of a big star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) mid-way through a shoot.
First revealed in 2004, the film was originally set to take place in the 1920s and follow actors performing a play about ancient Rome. The Coens shelved the idea until late 2013, when they stated it was in development. The project was confirmed to be in development in May 2014. Principal photography began in November 2014 in Los Angeles, California.
In February 2008, the Coens said that the film did not have a script, but only existed as an idea. The project was mentioned in a December 2013 interview about Inside Llewyn Davis. Joel Coen revealed that they were “working on” Hail, Caesar!, and that it would likely be their next project. The Coens confirmed the film’s development in May 2014, with the plot now focused on a “fixer” working in the Hollywood film industry in the 1950s.
Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Clancy Brown, Christopher Lambert, Robert Picardo and Dolph Lundgren (no, really) are among the rest of the ridiculous cast with Clooney and Brolin; and Hail Caesar! comes out February 26 next year
